Brain Cancer Answer Foundation honored for fundraising

May 19, 2025

Brain Cancer Answer Foundation, a Delaware nonprofit, recently received national recognition for hosting the second-highest fundraising event of 133 teams participating in the National Brain Tumor Society’s Fundraise Your Way program.

In concert with Brain Tumor Awareness Month, #GoGrayinMay, the group’s accomplishment was announced as part of the NBTS annual report to be officially released in June.

Brain Cancer Answer Foundation was established in 2023 in memory of Nicholas McGuiness, who lost his life to a brain tumor at the young age of 29. The McGuiness Memorial Golf Tournament and Auction raises funds through donations, sponsorship support, golf, donors and a silent auction held at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach.

The group raised $112,000 for the cause last year, with more than $200,000 secured since its inception. In 2024, the foundation was honored with the NBTS Fundraise Your Way Trailblazer Award for demonstrating a strong commitment to the mission to heighten recognition of brain tumors, and raise funds for brain tumor research and new treatments in the search for a cure. More than 1.3 million people are currently living with brain tumors in the United States.

“It has been heartbreaking to personally know, be close to friends and family of, or diagnose patients with (especially) malignant brain tumors,” said Dr. Christine Emery, Brain Cancer Answer Foundation president. “Much progress has been made in recent years, but to date, this has not translated into prolonged survival. We will continue to fight for a much-needed cure for this deadly disease.” A native of metro Philadelphia and retired neuroradiologist, Emery attended Jefferson Medical College and worked at Pennsylvania Hospital and Christiana Care in Newark during her career.

“The organization’s efforts are the reason why the NBTS can fund groundbreaking research, provide support and resources to patients and caregivers, and advocate for the urgent needs of the brain tumor community,” said Lauren Gainor, NBTS assistant vice president of philanthropic giving.

The 3rd Annual McGuiness Golf Tournament and Auction will be held Monday, Oct. 6, in Rehoboth Beach.
