Brandywine Valley SPCA granted $60K to help families keep pets
Brandywine Valley SPCA received a $60,000 grant investment from the newly named Petco Love to support its lifesaving work for animals across Delaware, and in Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania. The grant scope focuses on pet retention.
BVSPCA will apply the funding to help families keep the dogs and cats they love when faced with financial circumstances that could cause them to be surrendered to a shelter. It already has used some of the funds to help Cotton, an adorable senior pet in need of dental extractions that the owner couldn’t afford following a life-altering accident.
Petco Love is a nonprofit leading change for pets nationally by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger and healthier. Since its founding in 1999 as the Petco Foundation, it has empowered organizations with $300 million invested to date in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. It also has helped find loving homes for more than 6.5 million pets in partnership with Petco and over 4,000 organizations nationwide.
“Today, Petco Love announces an investment in Brandywine Valley SPCA and hundreds of other organizations as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, Petco Love president. “Our local investments are only one component. This month, we also launched the first of our national tools to empower all animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us.”
“Petco Love and the BVSPCA share the belief that a family shouldn’t have to give up the dogs and cats they love when faced with financial challenges,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA CEO. “We’ll be using this grant to help with needs that might cause a family to have to surrender a pet to a shelter, such as veterinary care or pet food.”
Founded in 1929, Brandywine Valley is the first open admission, no-kill shelter in Delaware and Pennsylvania. In 2020, the BVSPCA cared for more than 16,000 lost, stray, owner-surrendered, and abused and neglected animals while achieving a 96 percent live-release rate.
