Broadkill Tattoo Co. & Gallery opens in Milton
Sean Rhodes was thinking about opening his own tattoo studio before the world changed in mid-March when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.
The Milton tattoo artist says the pandemic forced his hand. “During these times, it makes sense for more of a private studio. Plus I have a love for this town, and I've wanted to open a business here for years,” he said.
On July 21, Sean and his partner, Joe Furio, and wife, Meesh Rhodes, opened Broadkill Tattoo Company & Gallery at 112 Federal St. in downtown Milton. As far as the couple knows, it's the first tattoo studio in Milton's history.
Previously, Sean was one of the partners at Tough Luck Tattoo near Lewes for 15 years; his wife worked there as manager.
Broadkill Tattoo Company follows strict health protocols, and everyone must wear a face covering at all times. Sean says he restricts the number of clients with an appointment-only system, no walk-ins. He's so in demand, he's already booked solid for the next two months.
He says in uncertain times, it's better to plan for the short term.
“Sean has such loyal clients they will go where he is,” Meesh said.
The interior of the shop is a feast for the eyes, with antiques, flea-market finds and eclectic art hanging on the walls.
Sean has been a tattoo artist for nearly 20 years, getting interested in the medium of tattooing during art school after graduating from Seaford High School. After a two-year apprenticeship, he got into the business full time.
If their names sound familiar, it's because they are the same couple who attracted attention with their HOPE signs. The signs are all over the Cape Region and beyond, and Meesh has branched out to offer other HOPE merchandise, including T-shirts. HOPE creations, including signs, are available at the studio, and much of their collection there is also for sale.
