A closely contested collision between defending Maryland 4A state champion Broadneck and Delaware state champion Cape Henlopen March 28, was won by the Bruins 8-6. The combined rosters, stacked with college commits, produced more cards than hat tricks.

There were hat-trick performances, while a total of 10 yellow cards were handed out. Most significantly, two cards were issued to Delaware Player of the Year Ally Diehl who left the game with 5:34 after being issued her second yellow. Diehl's first yellow was on a follow through in close quarters, what is sometimes called dangerous propelling.

"We don’t hesitate to play good people to make us better,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood said. “We got better today.”

Cape’s goals were scored by Makenzie Todd and Regan Best with two each, and single goals from Haley Gamuciello and Diehl.

Claire Lopez, who passed 150 career assists versus Caesar Rodney, had two assists, while Kemper Cox and Todd each had one.

Goalie Emily Wells and and Jordan Murray combined for four saves.

Broadneck was led in scoring by Harper Fry, Louisville commit Nora Lopes and Scarlett Burrows each with two, while Ceci Facciponi and Charlotte Robertson each had one.

Virginia Tech commit Molly Robison was in goal for the Bruins.

A brief history of the battle of the state champion rivalry between Broadneck and Cape shows the Vikings beating the Bruins 17-11 in 2025 and 8-7 in 2024 and 12-11 in 2023. Broadneck beat Cape 16-13 at Champions Stadium in 2022.

The last time Cape scored as few as six goals was in 2021 a 15-6 loss at St. Mary’s of Maryland. Cape would go on to post a record of 17-1 and win the Delaware state championship.

Cape next plays at Dover Wednesday, April 1.

Notes - Last spring, Broadneck captured its fifth straight 4A  Maryland state title. Broadneck has beaten Marriotts Ridge, South River and Cape Henlopen to start the 2026 season. This is the first season for head coach Caitline Gogoll, who replaced Katy Kelley, who stepped off after 25 years at the helm. Gogall is a former star midfielder at James Madison where her daughter now plays midfield. Broadneck, close to Annapolis, has 2,200 students in grades 9 through 12.
