Bucs get revenge on Cape boys

Vikings seeded 35th in open state tournament
March 1, 2021

Sophomore forward Ethan Wilkins scored 18 points to lead Milford to a 75-61 victory over visiting Cape Henlopen Feb. 25 in both teams’ regular-season finale.

The Bucs’ relentless pressure forced 24 Cape turnovers, the same number the Vikings coughed up in a win over Milford a day earlier.

Milford (3-10, 3-10 Henlopen North) forced the issue from the opening minutes, playing a frenetic brand of basketball that seemed a step too quick for Cape. The Bucs consistently attacked the rim in the half-court and capitalized on most of the Vikings’ miscues in transition. Milford took its first lead midway through the first quarter and never trailed again, maintaining a comfortable advantage thanks to Wilkins’ inside scoring and the three-point marksmanship of sophomore guard Andrew Kravitz.

Cape hung around until early in the fourth quarter, when the Buccaneers’ lead ballooned to 20 points.

Senior wing Ja’Vaughn Burton led the Vikings (4-9, 4-9 Henlopen North) with 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while junior forward Zimere Bolden added 11 points, eight boards, and three assists.

Cape head coach Shemik Thompson didn’t mince words after the loss.

“All season long it seems as though whenever we play a team, they come in knowing – with the highest of confidence – that they can beat Cape Henlopen,” Thompson said after his team allowed Milford to shoot 53 percent from the floor. “They could come to our gym, we could go to their gym, or we could go to the outdoor park, and those teams would know they have a very good chance of beating us. I don’t think they should feel that way, but for some reason, I think they do. I will say that Milford played really hard today. Their best player didn’t have to do too much, and everyone else stepped up for them.”

The Vikings got nine points and five rebounds from sophomore forward Dylan Fannin, while junior guard Kay’von Jackson and junior forward Brody Pedersen notched eight points apiece.

Cape drew the 35th seed in the DIAA state tourney and will travel north to face No. 30 William Penn Tuesday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m.
