You can learn a lot about life by spending time in a local coffee shop. For example, recently some 20 or so 150-pound bags of beans were unloaded on crates in front of a coffee shop. Two young workers in that shop took to the task of moving them into the shop, albeit with the necessary aid of a sturdy cowboy volunteer. It was so Lewes, lending a helping hand! That got me thinking about all those other helping hands on Second Street and elsewhere who make our daily lives both possible and pleasant. I refer to the employees (especially the lower-paid ones) whose contributions to our community are vital to our town and its well-being.
Community begins at home. By that measure, much needs to be done to show our gratitude to those often-unappreciated workers who give so much in return for so little. Just think of the food you eat, the beverages you consume, the books you buy (or check out), the clothes you wear, the chocolates you savor, the ice cream you like, the antiques you relish, the flowers you fancy, the pet playthings you purchase, the bikes you ride, the jewelry or art that brightens your life, the puzzles that tease your mind, the toys your children play with, or even the bank with which you trade. Of course, there are yet others (e.g., nurses, painters, etc.), but you get the idea.
So what about all of us (elected officials, business people, faith leaders, civic groups and media groups) putting our heads together and coming up with ways to show our appreciation to those who day in and day out do so much to make our town special?
To borrow from Luke Bryan: Let’s put “a little sugar in their Dixie cups.”
