CAMP Rehoboth Chorus will present the Magic of Motown in performances set for 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, and 3 p.m., Sunday, June 15, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach.
From 1961 to 1971, the Motown record label had 110 hits reach the Top 10 charts. The Motown record label played a vital role in the racial integration of popular soul music with crossover appeal to white audiences.
One of the most prolific Motown artists, Smokey Robinson, whose “Tracks of My Tears” is featured, said, “Into the 1960s, I was still not of a frame of mind that we were not only making music, we were making history … [Much later] I recognized the bridges that we crossed, the racial problems and barriers that we broke down with music.”
Audiences can expect classics like Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” and The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination” along with a ‘60s medley of Stevie Wonder’s legendary contributions including “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” among other favorites.
No Motown concert would be complete without a raucous rendition of “Respect,” popularized by Aretha Franklin, or Tina Turner’s iconic cover of “Proud Mary” to bring down the house.
Over the past 15 years, CAMP Rehoboth Chorus has grown to include 115 members from all walks of life with an expansive set of vocal experiences.
