CAMP Rehoboth's Volunteer on Vacation continues partnership with Sussex Habitat

October 11, 2012

CAMP Rehoboth’s Volunteer on Vacation wrapped up its season of community service with a second partnership with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness program. A team of 10 volunteers turned out Sept. 22 to renovate the home of a Rehoboth resident. The home was prepped and painted, and when it was completed, the owner declared it like new.

Volunteer on Vacation is all about making a difference. From the transformation of the gardens at a senior citizen's development, to the excited look on the faces of children visiting a farm, and the feeling of accomplishment upon viewing the freshly painted house of a handicapped gentleman at the first Habitat project, it has been a fun and rewarding season for the VOV volunteers. VOV is now in the process of planning its fall and winter community service activities.

CAMP Rehoboth's Volunteer on Vacation offers volunteer opportunities to residents and vacationers. It unites individuals and groups in creating a better community and is a continuation of the work done by CAMP Rehoboth, a nonprofit community service organization dedicated to creating a more positive environment in Rehoboth Beach and its related communities.

Now in its fourth year, VOV has provided enriching activities for underserved children and youth, supplied services for seniors in need, and formed countless new relationships while promoting inclusion and acceptance within the community. For more information on VOV, contact Leslie Sinclair at Leslie.Sinclair@hotmail.com.

A Brush with Kindness helps low-income homeowners by offering exterior home improvements. Volunteer teams work to improve the condition of homes by painting, landscaping and performing minor exterior repairs at minimal cost to homeowners who would be unable to complete home repairs on their own. Since 2010, Sussex Habitat has completed almost 40 ABWK projects across the county.

To qualify for a home repair, the applicant must own his or her own home, and show housing need within the scope of the program. Volunteers provide the labor for the project, and homeowners agree to pay back 100 percent of the materials cost to Habitat through monthly payments.
