Cape baseball advances to quarterfinals

Vikings roll over Lake 12-2
May 28, 2023

The Cape baseball team defeated Lake Forest 12-2 in five innings May 27 to set up a match against Caravel Academy in the DIAA quarterfinals at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, in Bear.

Freshman Trey Hitchcock, getting his first varsity start, led Cape with three hits and four RBIs. His big brother Timmy had three hits and three runs scored. First baseman Jase Mitchell had three hits and three RBIs, while Lex Wescott was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Owen Daminger had a double. Brenn Scott was walked three times, one intentionally, and knocked in an RBI.

“I’ve had some good practices, so I was hoping to start,” said Trey Hitchcock. “I made some adjustments in my swing ... stayed more on my back foot and sat fastball and reacted to the curve. That’s just what I did, and it worked. I’m happy, and as long as we continue to hit and play good D, it’ll work out.”

Jaxon Clampitt went all five innings on the mound, giving up just one earned run while striking out two batters.

The quarterfinal game against Caravel will be the second time (technically third time) the Vikings will see the Bucs this year. Caravel defeated Cape 2-1 May 13 in a game that began April 8, but was postponed when the lights went out.

“We were really happy with how our guys showed up,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “We have been off for two weeks, so missing those in-game reps was very important. Our focus was line drives, moving runners and putting runs across the plate. We did exactly that and played with intensity from the first pitch until the last out. We’re focused and locked in right now, and we’re excited for the next one.”
