Cape baseball plays tough in scrimmage with Woodbridge

March 14, 2022

The Cape baseball team hosted an afternoon scrimmage with Woodbridge March 11 at Chris Short Field.

Cape coach Ben Evick gave seven different pitchers one inning to show their stuff, and they did just that, shutting out Woodbridge each stanza.

Josh Reinhold started the scrimmage on the mound. Nick Cox followed with a powerful fastball. Timmy Hitchcock went third using all of the plate. Justin Marsh threw the fourth inning. Storm Carlisle controlled the fifth. Senior Austin Rhue threw the sixth. Mikey Jarrell finished the scrimmage in the seventh.

“Our pitchers did an excellent job of throwing strikes and getting ahead in counts,” Evick said. “We allowed just one hit and one walk for the seven-inning scrimmage. Seven different pitchers combined to finish with 16 strikeouts on the day. Nick Cox, Timmy Hitchcock, Austin Rhue and Mikey Jarrell each struck out the side.”

The Vikings also had a great day at the plate, as several batters garnered multiple hits.

Justin Marsh opened the scoring with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Brian Fleming had a double, a triple and four RBIs. Luke Crouch had a pair of hits with a triple.

The Vikings will open the season Thursday, March 24, with Caesar Rodney at Cape’s Chris Short Field.
