The Cape baseball squad used the mercy rule to defeat the Odessa Ducks 12-2 April 21 at Chris Short Field.
The Vikings outhit the Ducks 11-7 to move to 7-1 on the season.
Cape senior Max Selders went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Aaden Johnson was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Jack Simeone and Trizton Willey each also added two hits for the home squad.
“I just stopped thinking and swung the bat,” said Selders. “Once I got in the grove, I just stayed in it. Everything was going good for me today. I’m just happy I could help my team.”
Christian Cabello toed the rubber for the Vikings, throwing five strong innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out three Ducks.
“Christian continues to improve on the mound, getting ahead in counts and then not letting things get away from him if runners get on,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “Offensively, we had a lot of confidence in the box and strung together quite a few hits and took advantage of walks. Max Selders had a good day going 4-for-4. Two of his hits he beat out throws from the third baseman.”
Maddox Holland and Spencer Keating led the Ducks with two hits each.
The Vikings host Laurel Thursday, April 23, then travel to Wilmington Saturday, April 25, to face Salesianum.

A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016.
