Cape boys’ lax celebrates seniors with victory over Eagles

May 5, 2025

Junior Grant Conway had a scoring barrage for the Cape lacrosse squad as the Vikings junior scored half of the home team’s points in the 14-2 win over Smyrna on Senior Night, May 2 at Legends Stadium.

“I’m definitely excited,” said Conway. “After I got the first three, I started to feel really confident, and [it] being our last home game of the season and Senior Night, I got really excited to be out here one last time with them. This is a good win to celebrate our seniors.”

It was all Cape, as the 11-2 team tallied 10 goals in the first half, and the defense shut out the Eagles in the second and third periods.

Braddock Smith had a hat trick, while AJ Grapski scored twice. Brenner Short and Carter Nemcic each hit the twine once.

Burke Healy and Short each had two helpers while long pole Jake Hutchison had one.

Junior goalie Mason Trench stopped seven Smyrna scoring attempts, and sophomore keeper Patrick Little made three saves.

“We always know Smyrna is going to bring a lot of energy and really good athletes,” said Cape head coach Geoff Shupard. “I thought they played a good, hard game. I thought we could have shot the ball a little better, but our guys were able to move the ball well, play solid defense and set the tone for the game.”

Cape traveled to Archmere May 1, and put up 16 goals while allowing just five by the Auks.

Burke Healy and Brenner Short each scored four goals. Grant Conway, Ryan Morgan and Braddock Smith scored two goals apiece, and Eric Uffelman and AJ Grapski each had one.

Short helped on five goals while Hank Anderson had two assists. Grant Conway,  Healy, Morgan and AJ Grapski tallied one helper.

Goalie Mason Trench made six saves in the game.

“I think we started the Archmere game slow but picked it up in the second quarter,” said senior Evan Burris. “We played good in the middle of the field and won the majority of the face-offs, which led to our success. During the Smyrna game, we started off hot and continued it throughout the game. Ball movement was good and we got many high-quality looks. Grant had an amazing game with half our goals, so credit to him for shooting the ball well. It was a perfect Senior Night, and we all enjoyed it.”

The 11-2 Vikings travel to the Westtown School Tuesday, May 6, and will finish their regular season against Sussex Tech Friday, May 9, at DE Turf Complex.
