The Cape boys’ lacrosse team played tough defense and pounded the twine on offense to earn the Henlopen Conference Championship with an 18-1 win over Sussex Academy in Georgetown.

Ten different players scored in the Vikings’ running-clock victory. Cape scored early and often, taking a 9-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Vikings put up six more points before halftime.

The whole second half found the clock running, and the Vikings scored two in the third and one in the fourth to garner the conference championship trophy.

Michael Guenther scored four times. The second goal pushed him to 100 in his varsity career. Burke Healy, Jack Schell, Hank Anderson, Ryan Morgan and Lucas Stevenson each hit the twine twice. Anderson Smith, Braddock Smith, Brady Mauro and Grant Conway each scored once.

Guenther assisted on three goals. Healy and Mauro helped on two, while Schell, Brenner Short and Eric Uffelman each had one assist.

“This is a good confidence booster for the whole team,” said Guenther. “We needed it. The little stuff that affected us big against Sallies, we got on track to correct it today. It’s a step in the right direction. These younger guys have been here the entire time working hard, and they deserve the playing time.”

“It sends us off on a good note to start the playoffs,” said Healy. “It’s definitely a good team win. We got to see our entire team get in and just cheer for everyone. It’s a good environment on a Saturday. The weather wasn’t too nice, but it’s always nice to get the win with my friends.”

“It means a lot to us to get this win,” said junior long stick middie Jordyn Preskenis. “We all have worked pretty hard to get to this point. Having a win like this one is pretty special, especially because we got everyone in the game. It’s a step in the right direction for us.”

Sophomore goalie Mason Trench made four saves in the cage, while senior Augustine Musika stopped five shots and freshman Patrick Little, making his varsity debut, made a save.

“We just approached this game like any other game,” said Cape head coach Geoff Shupard. “We don’t care what the name says on the other jersey, we’re going to come out and give them everything we’ve got. We certainly came out and took care of business today. I’m really proud of them. I’m looking forward to going to practice every day with these guys again. Most teams are getting ready for summer, but we get to go to practice and be a family for a little while longer. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The Vikings earned the second seed in the DIAA state tournament and will play No. 15 Sussex Tech Wednesday, May 22.
