Cape boys’ swimming wins dual-meet championship

The Cape Henlopen boys’ swim team finished off its Henlopen Conference schedule undefeated, garnering the regular-season, dual-meet championship with a 139-23 victory over Seaford Feb. 1 at Sussex Academy Aquatic Center. They move to 12-1 with just one match remaining against the Salisbury School Tuesday, Feb. 8.
The boys’ team took first in every event in the meet.
The Lady Vikings moved to 10-3 with a 123-31 win over the Blue Jays on Senior Night, winning nine of 11 events on the day.
”It was nice to see Seaford had more swimmers this year,” said Cape head coach Bill Geppert. “Their coaches are working hard to improve their program.”
“Senior Night is always bittersweet. You are happy for all the hard work they have done, but sad they are graduating. Most of them have been with us for four years, through all the COVID stuff along with it. Through it all, they have been a resilient bunch and have kept working hard. They will be missed. A meet like this one gives us a chance to reward everyone with a chance to swim different things and fight for conference spots.”
“It was great winning the conference,” said senior Josh Reinhold. “We had a strong season overall, and I’m proud of how everyone improved and developed as the season went on. But we are working toward the conference meet championship. The boys fell just short last year, and it left a bitter taste in our mouths.”
“I think that we had a very productive swim season and a great team leading to our victory,” said senior Marcus Gromofsky. “I think that if we continue to work hard, we might even have a chance taking the conference tournament swim meet.”
“Overall, the girls had a great season,” said senior Heidi Simmons. “We went against some really good teams, and we gave everything we had at every meet. I’m really proud of every single girl on our swim team for performing at their best all season.”
