Cape cross country teams close dual-meet season undefeated

It was runners away on Senior Day Nov. 20 on the Legends Stadium track featuring Cape Henlopen hosting Sussex Tech in the last dual meet of the late-starting season. 

Cape won the boys’ meet 16-45, while the girls’ team won 17-41. Both Cape teams finished undefeated 7-0 and moved toward the three bigger meets to close out the season. 

The Sussex County Championships are set for Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Sandhill Fields in Georgetown. That’s followed by the Henlopen Conference Championships Saturday, Nov. 28, at Killens Pond State Park. The season ends with the DIAA Cross Country State Championship Meet Saturday, Dec. 5, at Killens Pond.  

Cape took six of the top seven places in the boys’ race. The order of finish was Julian Callaway in 17:13, Ethan Edery in 17:26, Daniel Adili-Khams in 17:35 and Lance Kauffman in 17:42. David Geyer broke up the Cape party as the Ravens’ first finisher in 18:03. He was followed by Liam O’Donnell in 18:13, Andrew Wolak in 18:43, Colin Kay of Sussex Tech in 18:46, Joseph Klosiewicz of Sussex Tech in 18:59 and Jakob Hayes in 19:17. 

Cape’s Katie Kuhlman ran a personal-best time of 20:11, setting a course record in the process. The order of finish following Kuhlman was: Mia Nuebling in 21:08, Ariana Adili-Khams in 21:11, Kaitlyn Cavallucci of Sussex Tech in 21:52, Peyton Evans in 22:14, Lindsay Rambo in 22:24, Alicia Guajardo of Sussex Tech in 22:44, Elizabeth Melson in 22:53, Arina Varrato of Sussex Tech in 23:19 and Victoria Lecates in 23:29. 

Cape’s top runner on the boys’ side, Ryan Baker, did not compete in the meet, but he will return for Henlopen Conference and state meets.
