Cape district honors Lewes Senior Activity Center

December 29, 2025

The Cape Henlopen School District recognized Lewes Senior Activity Center as its Sussex Consortium Community Champion Award for December.

LSAC representatives reached out several years ago, interested in building a relationship with the Sussex Consortium. After they toured the Sweetbriar Road building and met with program leaders, it became clear that a partnership would be mutually enriching. Soon students began visiting the center each week to participate in social activities, games, crafts, cooking lessons and conversations with center members.

From the very first visit, Lewes Senior Activity Center members welcomed students with warmth, kindness and genuine connection. Staff quickly saw how these interactions helped students open up and talk with members about school, friendships, family and everyday life. In return, students received thoughtful guidance, encouragement and perspective from individuals with decades of lived experience.

The center’s support has also extended far beyond weekly programming. When one student’s mother died, center staff and members stepped in immediately, offering compassion and assistance by helping plan and host a heartfelt celebration of life. At the end of the school year, the center organized a graduation celebration for students transitioning out of the program, bringing together families, staff and community members to honor their achievements.

Students have expressed just how much this partnership means to them, acknowledging that they enjoy spending time with the members, doing arts and crafts, and meeting new people.

“We are honored to recognize the Lewes Senior Activity Center for their remarkable generosity and support,” said Dr. Eileen Baker, supervisor of inclusive education. “Their willingness to open their doors and their hearts has created meaningful relationships that have helped our students grow in confidence, social skills and connection. This partnership is a beautiful example of the power of community.”
