The Cape field hockey team was able to grind out a 5-0 statistical win over an athletic Lake Forest team Sept. 9 at Champions Stadium behind a pair of goals from St. Joe’s commit Atia Sabbagh and single goals from Alysa McCarthy, Emily Wells and Teagan Baker.
Avary Miller, Mairead Rishko and Grace Heers assisted on goals.
The Vikings led 2-0 at halftime.
“Our ball patterns were better in the second half and we picked up the speed of play,” said coach Kate Austin. “Lake is a physical and athletic team. They are tough in the middle of the field and have a good goalie.”
Spartans goalie Jessica Lewis tallied 12 saves.
Cape outshot the Spartans 19-0, and had an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Cape’s backline defense of Regan Best, Ally Diehl and Ellen Ramsey protected the cage. Goalies Izzy Mekulski and Jordynn Bowe combined for their third consecutive shutout.
Cape has also been running the roster on the first three opponents, keeping fresh legs on the field. Sabbagh’s two-goal performance was the first multi-goal output by an individual player in the three wins by a combined 17-0 score.
Cape next plays Sussex Tech Thursday, Sept. 11, and Sussex Central Tuesday, Sept. 16. Both games start at 6 p.m.
