Cape football won its second straight game Sept. 5, with a 35-7 victory over William Penn at Legends Stadium.
The Vikings displayed a balanced attack, scoring a touchdown in each of the first two quarters before erupting for two more in the third and another in the fourth. Through two games, Cape has scored 68 points, while its stingy defense has allowed only 10 against a pair of upstate opponents.
“We have a lot of first-time starters,” said coach Chip Knapp. “They are stepping up to the challenge and playing well. Our special teams are doing great. We have two new kickers in Sam Schubert and Austin Tyndall. Sam has been pinning opponents deep with his kickoffs, and Austin is making the PATs. Del Richards is also playing well at tight end, both blocking and catching passes. Every game we’re getting a little better. It’s fun to watch.”
Junior quarterback Jameson Tingle went 8-for-14 passing for 113 yards. On the ground he carried the ball nine times for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Oz Batson led the rushing attack with 10 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony Francis chipped in three carries for 20 yards and a score.
Through the air, Amari Jackson hauled in three passes for 48 yards. Richards caught three balls for 34 yards and a touchdown. Aidan Lemuth added a 31-yard reception, while Batson and Micah Jackson grabbed catches for 19 and 12 yards, respectively.
“I thought we played OK,” Tingle said. “Obviously we got the win, but there are things we need to work on. I’m glad we found them out now and not later in the season when we’re in the playoffs or in a dogfight of a game.”
Next up, Cape travels to Lake Forest Friday, Sept. 12, for a matchup with the Spartans. Lake opened its season last week with a 42-0 win over North Caroline (Md.).
