Cape football falls to Smyrna 54-14

Vikings face Ravens Nov. 8 to finish season
November 4, 2019

Cape sophomore Jordan Baines scored two touchdowns, but the visiting Vikings fell to Smyrna 54-14 Nov. 1 on the Eagles’ Senior Night. The Vikings drop to 2-7 on the season.

Baines had nine carries for 85 yards for Cape. Jaden Davis carried 17 times for 23 yards and a fumble, while Daniel Saez had eight yards on three carries.

Cape quarterback Hank D'Ambrogi went 4-for-17 for 30 yards and two interceptions. Ja’Vaughn Burton caught three passes for 27 yards, while William Tyndall pulled in one pass for three yards.

Cape head coach J.D. Maull still saw positives in the game.

“I thought we competed in this game,” said Maull. “We were a big-time underdog, but I’m happy with our effort. We started three freshmen on defense in key positions, and we were shaky in the beginning, but we are taking positive steps. Smyrna is really, really good, and they carry out their fakes so well. Their no-huddle offense didn’t give us much time to get together on defense. [Smyrna’s defense] was keying on Jaden, which opened up Jordan and he scored twice for us. We have to give Hank some blocking to give him a little more time.”

The Vikings will travel to Sussex Tech Friday, Nov. 8, to finish the 2019 season.

“I’m hoping we can put four quarters together,” said Maull. “We are getting better, so I’m hoping we can do well in the game.”
