Cape football grounded by the Eagles 54-8

Vikings to play Appo in playoffs
November 15, 2021

The Cape football squad fell to second-ranked Smyrna 54-8 on Senior Night Nov. 12 at Legends Stadium.

The only things missing from the Vikings’ football sideline this week were “Hawkeye” Pierce, “Trapper John” and Col. Potter, as coach J.D. Maull’s team resembled the MASH 4077 unit due to injuries that have sidelined Thomas Gibbs, Hank D’Ambrogi, Finley Jones, Chancler Johnson, Jordan Baines, Jeb Zolper, Malaki Lewis and Maurki James.

Still, the remaining players left it all on the field, playing with heart and intestinal fortitude, and they will take their heads held high into the playoffs against Appoquinimink Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. in Middletown.

“Joe Coveleski did well in his first varsity start tonight,” Maull said. ”Keishawn [Mansfield] and Thomas [Messick] played well too. We had a lot of new guys out there tonight. They played hard.”

Coveleski, playing for the injured D’Ambrogi, threw 10-for-16 for 53 yards and a two-point conversion. Daniel Saez caught two passes for 28 yards, while Odin DeLazaro Potemski pulled in a catch for nine yards. Ethan Felker caught a three-yard pass for a two-point conversion. Thomas Messick caught three passes for 10 yards. Brenn Scott snagged one for three yards.

Mansfield led the Cape rushers with five carries for 81 yards and a touchdown. Saez rushed seven times for 18 yards. Messick rushed four times for 14 yards.

The Vikings finish the regular season at 1-9 with their only win a 14-7 victory over Caesar Rodney.

The Vikings will have to dig deep against the Jags, as they fell to them 55-27 Oct. 28 in Middletown. D’Ambrogi threw two touchdown passes and ran for another in that game.
