Cape football set to scrimmage First State Military Aug. 12

Mike Frederick enters second season as head coach
August 10, 2023

The book “Season of Life," written by sports writer Jeffery Marx, is about a 2001 undefeated football achieved by the Gilman School Greyhounds of Baltimore.

Biff Poggi was the head coach. Joe Ehrmann, former Colts linebacker captain and ordained minister, was on that staff. Ehrmann asked the players before each game, “What is our job as coaches?”

“To love us,” the boys yelled back in unison.

“’What is your job?” Joe shot back.

“To love each other,” the boys responded.

Cape football head coach Mike Frederick was on that coaching staff. He is a physically imposing former NFL defensive end for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans.

He’s now entering his second season at Cape, and the players know coach Frederick has their backs while capturing their hearts.

The Vikings are coming off a 4-6 regular season, losing three games they were in a position to win, including 28-21 to Salesianum, 21-14 to Appoquinimink and 28-19 to St. Georges Tech.

The 2023 season has Cape opening against Red Lion Academy Thursday, Aug. 31, then a series of Friday night games against Delcastle at home, Lake Forest on the road, Hodgson at home and Saint Mark’s on the road.

The back half of the schedule features Cape at Sussex Central, home versus Caesar Rodney and Smyrna, then away at Dover, and a Saturday game at St. Georges Tech.

The coaching staff for the upcoming season includes Ben Ashby, Jack Frederick, Eddie Ghabour, Jason Hunt, Scott Vaillancourt, Dwight Tingle, Mike Guenther and Jason Feather.

Cape will scrimmage First State Military at Legends Stadium at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 12.
