A 5K race kicked off a day of fun in Nassau Commons outside Lewes, as the Cape Gazette held its inaugural Run and Fun Fest May 13.

The unique course began in Nassau Commons and took runners through Nassau Valley Vineyards, then along Janice Road in front of Lewes Fire Department and Lewes Senior Activity Center to the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail. After turning around on the trail and retracing the route most of the way back, runners finished on a long, uphill straightway in Nassau Commons.

Matt Sparacino, 45, of Harrington topped a field of 204 finishers to claim the overall title in 18:27, more than a minute faster than runner-up Steve Eshelman, 29, of Millsboro, who clocked a time of 19:31.

Eve Hoffman, 36, of Washington, D.C., crossed the line third to win the women’s title in 19:35. Kirk Millikan, 33, of Richmond, Va., finished fourth with a time of 19:52; and Bobby Hutton, 59, of Rehoboth rounded out the top five and won the male masters title in a time of 20:05. Tanya Karaman, 52, of Smyrna, finished first in the women’s 50-59 age category and won the female masters title with a time of 23:34.

The majority of runners in the field live in Delaware, but the race drew athletes from seven other states and Washington, D.C.
