Cape girls’ basketball scores 16-point win over CR

December 17, 2018

The Cape girls’ basketball team moved to 3-1 on the season with a commanding 51-35 win over the Riders at Caesar Rodney.

The Vikings defense locked down the Riders offense, as Cape outscored the home team in  three of the four periods.

“We play better fast,” said Cape head coach Pat Woods. “When they depend on their instincts and just play hard without thinking too much, they’re great. And they like it. Our full court man-to-man gets us going. It just hassles people and we are disciplined enough and can angle back and find out their responsibilities on defense. It picks up our pace.”

Nya Mosley put up 13 points for the Lady Vikings, while teammate Dania Cannon added 12. Mehkia Applewhite and Lexi Watkins scored seven and six points, respectively. Morgan Mahoney and Carlin Quinn each hit for a bucket.

“Our fast passes made our game better tonight,” said Mosley. “They didn’t expect us to play that well.”

Woods also praised his junior transfer Carlin Quinn for her defensive efforts.

“Defensively, she’s an animal,” said Woods. “She rebounds the heck out of the ball.”

Quinn, a junior transfer from Elizabeth Seton High School in Washington, loves mixing it up under the boards.

“I definitely like playing underneath the basket,” said Quinn.

The Cape junior varsity defeated the Riders 19-10 in a defensive battle. Elizabeth Rishko led the JV with six points, while Jhayden Holloman added four. Lauryn Head scored three, while Destiny Kusen, Kelly Bragg and Taonshaye Trader each added two.

The Vikings host Milford on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
