The Smyrna girls’ lacrosse team got rocked by Cape 18-5 on the Vikings’ Senior Night May 9.
The Eagles left Champions Stadium with an 8-6 record with one game remaining. Smyrna is a no-backdown demographic of female athletes. Down the road, the Eagles will threaten to level up with the top-tier teams.
Cape (13-0-1) plays at Caesar Rodney (13-1) Tuesday, May 13, to close out the regular season. It is getting “muy interesante” before the post-season goes full-boat crazy.
Cape graduates only four seniors, and the program is stacked all the way down through three middle schools.
Leading the scoring for Cape were Macy Steinwedel with five goals and Ally Diehl with three. Avary Miller, Claire Lopez and Haley Gamuciello each tallied two, while Makenzie Todd, Mairead Rishko, Regan Best and Lina Frederick scored one goal apiece.
Assist leaders for Cape were Lopez with four, and Steinwedel, Amara Fruchtman, Gamuciello and Frederick each with one.
Abigail Schaeffer had six saves.
Goal scorers for Smyrna were Ava Pierce with two, and Alexis Hutchison, Ava Elias and Macey Masten with one each.
Norah Kelly had six saves.
