Cape girls' basketball opens season with win over Smyrna
Cape's 6-foot-3 sophomore Abby E'Nama stood tall in the paint blocking 15 shots to help lead the Vikings to a 31-21 win over the Eagles Dec. 9 at Smyrna.
"Abby played great in the paint," said head coach Lamont Hazzard. "She put a lot of pressure on their shooters."
The Vikings went out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and added 13 more in the second to take a 24-4 lead into the halftime break.
"Our younger players [Sydney Pedersen and Logan Shuttleworth] stepped up in this game," said Hazzard. "They were able to do this because Madison [MacElrevey] controlled the game and took the pressure off them."
Smyrna mounted a charge in the second half, outscoring the Vikings by 10 points, but that wasn't enough as the 1-0 Vikings took home a 31-21 victory.
"We were eager to start off this season on a high note," said guard Alison Palmer. "Cape hasn't beaten Smyrna since the 2008-09 season, and we wanted to play well in this game."
Freshmen Logan Shuttleworth with 12 and Sydney Pedersen with 10 paced the Vikings in scoring in their first varsity game. Madison MacElrevey handled the ball and contributed 7 points.
