Cape girls’ basketball celebrates seniors with big win

February 6, 2022

The Cape Henlopen girls’ basketball seniors led their team to a 50-point, 76-26 win over Smyrna Feb. 4.

It was the Mehkia Applewhite show, as she hit for 33 points, 12 steals and six assists.

“It means a lot to us to play this well on Senior Night,” said Applewhite. “It was exciting.”

The Cape girls’ basketball Class of 2022 has a 65-12 record (50-2 in Henlopen North divisional play) in its four years.

Senior Julia Saleur scored 14 points. Morgan Mahoney put up 13 with nine rebounds. Defensive specialist Ella Rishko scored six and made seven steals. Seniors Mackenzie Vitolo, Kelly Bragg and Lauryn Head contributed a great defensive game.

Mya Maull, Faith Re, Ja'Onna Lee, Hayden Hudson and Grace Totten played ablaze off the bench.

“We did a good job with what we have practiced,” said Cape head coach Pat Woods. “Mehkia was all in tonight. She was everywhere tonight, and that got everyone hyped. I liked our pace, but we have to stay disciplined against Sanford next Friday.”

Glennyce James was the high scorer for the Eagles.

The Lady Vikings travel to Sussex Central Tuesday, Feb. 8, host Polytech Wednesday, Feb. 9, then travel to Sanford, Friday, Feb. 11.
