The Cape Henlopen High golf team continued its winning ways with a 150-162 April 23 win against Indian River at Bear Trap Dunes.
The Vikings’ score was their lowest this season, matching last May’s win against Polytech in the Henlopen North playoff match.
Kingston Davis and Ryan McNett tied IR’s Ellie Walls for medalist honors with even-par 36s. Jack Tunnell came next for Cape with a 38. Chad Hughey and Ethan James tied for the fourth score with 40s.
The Vikings next played Lower Cape May Regional High School April 27 in the third edition of the Twin Capes Classic.
The Cape squad posted another 150, outscoring the Tigers by 24 strokes. McNett and Tunnell earned co-medalist with 37s on the Rehoboth Beach Country Club front nine. Gabby Hamstead and Davis both posted 38s for a rare all-four-golfers-under-40 score set.
While grinning broadly, Tunnell said, “I just played the most boring round of my life. Two birdies, one bogey. Hit almost every fairway, almost every green. Putting from inside 8 feet was crucial today.”
Lower Cape May coach Anthony D’Aleo said, “The day was beautiful. Great course. Our top two guys [Alex Sekela and Cole Bada] played like we thought they would, 39 and 40. The rest of the team had a humbling experience.”
Cape coach Bill Geppert said, “I’m just impressed with the consistency of our team. We’ve had two 150s in a row. Last week, we had three [golfers] in the 30s, now we had four.”
The Vikings defeated Lake Forest April 28 at Jonathan’s Landing in Magnolia 160-179. Tunnell earned medalist again with an even-par 36. Davis’s 40, McNett’s 41 and Hughey’s 43 made up the rest of the scoreline.
The Cape squad traveled to Heritage Shores April 29 to play Sussex Tech and came away with another victory, this time 158-180.
Hamstead and McNett tied for medalist honors with a pair of 39s on the back nine. Hughey and Tunnell tied for third and fourth with 40s. Zachary Douglass also posted a 40 for best score among the Ravens.
Seahawks bounce back
The Sussex Academy golf team recovered from a string of recent losses with a 162-164 victory over Caesar Rodney April 23.
CR’s Nathaniel Clark won medalist with his 38. However, Nicholas DeEmedio’s 39 and three 41s from Jordan Green, Ryan Kline and Bodhi Williams earned the Seahawks’ team triumph.
Seahawks coach Keith Kendzierski said, “I think we can reach the goals we have set as a team. We definitely feel like we’re trending in the right direction.”
The Seahawks celebrated Senior Day April 27 by beating Dover and Polytech on the front nine at Kings Creek CC, 164-198 and 164-182, respectively. Green earned medalist with his 38, with DeEmedio posting a 39. Jack Dale’s 41 and Gino Magliano’s 46 finished the Seahawks’ scoring for the match.
Delmarva Christian improves
Delmarva Christian traveled April 28 to Patriot’s Glen near Elkton, Md., home course for Caravel Academy of Bear. The Royals lost 162-176, but posted their lowest stroke total for the season.
Michael Sheehan of Caravel earned medalist honors with his 36. Delmarva Christian’s Elvis Millway posted a 40 for his best score. Avery McCoy shot 44 for the second spot. Donavan Balback and Cole Parker tied with 46s to finish the team total.
Royals coach Ray Davis said, “The kids are really starting to lock in and get ready to finish our last three matches strong and see where we fall in the state rankings.”
AJGA tourney a success
More than 70 young golfers from more than 18 states and three countries competed on the Rehoboth Beach Country Club course April 23-26 in the American Junior Golf Association’s Junior All-Star tournament.
The 54-hole event included boys and girls ages 12-15. According to the scoreboard, my own observation and those of the folks I met, the quality of play was stellar.
Kayleigh Chung of Richmond Hill, Ontario, won the girls’ category with a two-over par total. Weston Kim of Oakton, Va., won the boys’ category by the same score after a one-hole playoff with Alex Mack of Stamford, Conn.
Lucas Skonieczski of Rehoboth Beach tied for 12th place among the boys, and Sam Metz of Rehoboth tied for 33rd.
AJGA Northeast Regional Director Adam Brueggman said, “It’s not every tournament, or every club, where players and their families feel so welcomed, and the support from the community was evident through the tremendous hospitality and volunteer efforts throughout the week.”
Net proceeds are expected to be donated to the Veteran Golfers of America.
“It was truly a first-class experience from start to finish,” said RBCC Director of Golf Pat Mastrian.
