Cape Henlopen High School graduate interns in China with the Gazette

August 25, 2017

Madison MacElrevey, pictured to the right of her classmate, Miranda Smith, completed a ten-week internship at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, China. Pandas bred at the facility are released into the wild and the goal is to build a self-sustaining population. Madison conducted behavioral research on one-year old panda cubs, comparing the traits of siblings versus non-siblings. This study will help conservationists determine which pandas to use for reintroduction by allowing them to predict which pandas have behaviors most beneficial to survival in the wild.

The trip also included hiking, exploring ancient towns and sipping lots of tea at tea houses. To conclude the trip, Madison and Miranda will travel to Xi’an to see the Terracotta Warriors and Beijing to see the Great Wall. Madison is entering her junior year at Otterbein University in Ohio and majoring in Conservation Science.
