Broussard, Evans, Friday, Stinar enter national art competition, to be announced March 23

Several first-time ceramics students at Cape High have netted regional awards for their work, with a few artists now competing for national honors.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, a prestigious national competition, has recognized creative teens at the regional and national levels with Gold Key, Silver Key and honorable mention citations.

Cape High students earning regional Gold Keys are Soyoka Broussard, Clio Evans, Zoey Friday and Abby Stinar. Liam Harvey and Love Northop received Silver Keys, and Gwen Khine, Ester Moreno and Evelyn Turman earned honorable mentions.

All students created their own designs, said teacher Ragan Callahan, who participated in the contest as a high school student herself.

Cape students, many of whom had not created any ceramics since early elementary grades, said they were shocked to be recognized; however, their work appears astoundingly advanced for novice potters.

Clio, a junior who created an eye-popping purple, yellow and tan vase, said she plans to attend art school when she graduates.

“I like different kinds of art that makes you look at it, and is kind of creepy sometimes,” she said.

Zoey said she first sketched her idea for an Egyptian beetle vase on an envelope at her great-grandmother’s house. Abby said she was stumped for ideas until an image of sprouting mushrooms appealed to her. Evelyn said she decided to use unique yellow and bronze colors for her vase.

Gold Key award winners now vie for national honors, which should be announced by March 23, said Jennifer Gunther, who manages the Delaware Regional Scholastic Art Awards program.

Student entries are judged without knowledge of the student’s identity or hometown, and jurors look for work that best exemplifies originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

The artwork of regional Gold Key winners is on display at The Arts Center/Gallery at Delaware State University through Friday, Feb. 18, Gunther said.

A virtual awards presentation for the Delaware Regional Art & Writing Awards will include an exhibition/slideshow and will launch Saturday, Feb. 12, on YouTube, Gunther said. More information and links to the virtual program will be posted on The Arts Center/Gallery website at artgallery.desu.edu.
