Cape field hockey rocked and rolled through a final play day Aug. 23 at Champions Stadium, battling four good teams that the Vikings will face in the regular season.
Stephen Decatur, Tower Hill, Sussex Academy and Queen Anne’s all scrimmaged Cape. All are formidable teams destined for winning seasons.
“A work in progress,” said Cape coach Kate Austin as she described her young team. But in the words of a former Tower Hill coach, “Cape has a deep bench,” implying the Vikings are always going to be good.
The quest to be the best begins Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7, with the Bi-State Challenge, when Cape will play Queen Anne’s Friday, followed by a Saturday game hosting Stephen Decatur.
Delmar balances out the Delaware side of the bi-state weekend.
Looking through the September short lens of the long season, Cape will play at Smyrna Thursday, Sept. 12; host Tower Hill Saturday, Sept. 21; and play at Milford Thursday, Sept. 26.
The Vikings have 50 total players on the varsity and JV rosters.
