Cape hockey meets the moment to beat Smyrna 2-0

Vikings remain unbeaten and unscored upon
September 30, 2022

The Cape field hockey team, with nine underclassmen in the starting lineup, met the moment at Smyrna Sept. 30, beating the Eagles 2-0 on second-period goals by Addy Basile and Mackinzie Brown, both assisted by Hannah Maney.

The Vikings are now 7-0 on the season, with all wins coming by shutout.

The Eagles lost for the first time this season and are likely to see Cape again in the postseason state tournament.

Cape beat Smyrna in the 2021 state finals, but graduated 10 seniors from that roster.

“We win for our coaches and for Cape,” said Maney after the game. “Players appreciate the tradition, and we play to win and to keep it going. And big games against good teams like Smyrna are fun.”

Cape outshot Smyrna 13-5, with a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners. Eagles goalie Halle Geiger had 12 real-deal saves.

Cape’s Morgan Newcomb, the starter on last year's state championship team, had three saves. She has 18 shutouts in her two years as a starter.

The Cape defense of Devon DeGregory, Lexi Truitt and Lina Frederick hasn’t allowed a goal this season.

A quick, talented midfield line doesn't allow much seepage inside the Cape circle.

“Definitely more traffic today,” DeGregory said. “We were busy, but the game was fun.”

Cape will host Polytech Tuesday, Oct. 4, then they have a date at Delmar Thursday, Oct. 6. The Wildcats have not lost in more than 100 games.

Blue chair quips - Milford upset Sussex Tech 3-2, outshooting the Ravens 22-13. The Bucs, deep with athletic talent, are a player on the Division I side of the balance sheet and are a threat to knock off anyone in a “turkey’s on the table” meaningful game. Dover upset Polytech 2-1 in overtime on a goal by Hadley Lewicki. Poly had a 26-5 shot advantage and 16-4 edge on penalty corners. Dover goalie Savannah Strauss was credited with 10 saves. Dover will host Milford Oct. 4, in a what’s-up game for both teams. Saturated fields syndrome is likely to disrupt games early next week on non-turf  venues. Krista Wing, head coach at Woodbridge, had the Blue Raiders at 4-2 and proved they can hang with mostly anyone. The Bridge will play at Cape Thursday, Oct. 20, and at Delmar Tuesday, Oct. 25.
