Cape JROTC cadets receive awards

Leadership, academics and heroism noted

The Cape Henlopen Board of Education honored 15 Junior ROTC cadets Jan. 26 for outstanding service during the first semester.

"They've worked hard and done a great job," said Lt. Col. Ron Erale, head of the high school program.

Cadets received awards for community service, academic excellence, leadership, military achievement and heroism. Receiving the U.S. Army Heroism Medal was Cadet Major Alicia Hearne. who last summer saved the life a heart attack victim and earned the honor for her brave work, Erale said.

In addition to Alicia, the following cadets earned awards: Scott Hamilton, Staff Officer of the Semester; Colby Garbutt, Platoon Leader of Semester; Hannah Morley, Platoon Sergeant of Semester, ninth grade; Eric Brown , Assistant Platoon Sergeant of Semester; Rheanna Ferguson, Squad Leader of Semester, ninth grade; Troy Patino, Squad Leader of Semester; Charles Kloetzi , Cadet of the Semester Medal; Ryan Dawson, Senior Army Instructor Medal; Drewcilla Long, Army Instructor Medal; Ryan Coleman, Army Instructor Medal; Laura Bates, Community Service; Abigail Finch, Community Service; Isaac Sampson, Most Improved Cadet; Sylvester Lovett, Best Drilled Platoon Leader; and John Lione, Best Drilled Squad Leader.
