Cape lacrosse shakes and bakes the Quakers 20-7

Vikings play Milford for conference title on Friday
May 15, 2019

The Wilmington Friends men’s lacrosse team walked down a paved road to Mellow Field Tuesday afternoon to face a powerful Cape Henlopen team. The entrance is impressive, but once the game started, it was all downhill for the struggling Quakers.

Cape led 8-1 at the end of one quarter on the way to a 20-7 victory. The Vikings closed out the regular season 13-2 and will play at Milford Friday night, May 17, for the Henlopen Conference Championship.

Friends slipped to 3-11 on the season with one game remaining.

Goal scorers for Cape were Gabe Best and Jack Dennis with three each; JP Heid, Adem Tekmen, Hank D’Ambrogi and LB Harrington each with two; and single goals from Luke D’Ambrogi, Brody McMahon, Drew Dennis, Blake Gipko, Finbar Rishko and Jaden Davis.

Assist leaders were Jack Dennis and Luke D’Ambrogi with three apiece, Hank D’Ambrogi and Robbie Rickenbach with two each, and Gabe Best and Adem Tekmen both scoring once.

Goals scored by Wilmington Friends were Nick Redd and Sullivan Connors with two apiece, and Lucien McKean, Max Grimes and Cole Morris each with one.

Milford is 11-4 on the season and Henlopen Conference Southern Division Champion. The Bucs come into the game with a six-game winning streak. Game time on Friday night is 6 p.m.

The last day of the regular season for boys’ lacrosse is Saturday, May 18. First-round games begin Tuesday and Wednesday, May 21 and 22.

The seeded brackets will be available Sunday, May 19. Cape is expected to earn the top spot, but the looming question is where will defending champion Salesianum be seeded with six losses and only four games played against in-state opponents?
