Cape lacrosse starts fast, bests Archmere 15-9
The Archmere at Cape boys’ lacrosse game April 7 was moved from early afternoon to 6 p.m., so Archmere players could attend an on-campus memorial service for Mark Lee Dombroski, a 2017 graduate who died in Bermuda three weeks ago while touring with the St. Joseph’s University rugby team. Mark had fallen down a 35-foot cliff while walking alone at night.
The Auks 2-0 lost to Cape twice last year, once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. Each loss was 11-9.
Two years ago, the Auks beat Cape 11-7. They have become one of the better programs in the state.
But the focus Saturday was elsewhere, as Cape dominated well into the third quarter, leading 10-1. Archmere came a long way back thanks to a three-minute non-releasable penalty for illegal stick, clawing back for a final score of 15-9.
“We played well throughout the first half and took excellent care of the ball,” said coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “We shot well and got contributions from a bunch of different people in the first half. Jack Dennis, Adam Tekman, Gabe Best and Luke D’Ambrogi were on the receiving end of some nice feeds and were able to put them away. In the second half, we got a little complacent, which led to turnovers and quick possessions, which gave them extra chances to score, and Archmere is capable of putting together some scoring runs.”
Cape was led in scoring by Best and Luke D’Ambrogi with four goals each. Tekman tallied two goals, while Dennis, James Heid, Broderick McMahon, Andre Currie and Aarin Burton each had single goals.
Sean Griffith, a first-year starter, had 10 saves in the game for Cape.
The Auks were led in scoring by Mitch Moyer with six goals and Nolan Collins, Brian Neill and Luke Grant with one each.
Cape will play at Sussex Central at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, then face Salesianum at Wesley College at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 14.
Cape, Saint Mark’s and Caesar Rodney are the only Delaware schools on the Salesianum schedule.
