Cape lax girls surge to 15-4 win over Queen Anne’s
The Cape girls’ lacrosse team surged in the second half against Queen Anne’s April 13 at Champions Stadium, scoring 12 straight goals to secure a 15-4 win and ease out to a 4-2 record.
The front-loaded tough schedule continues Saturday, April 18, as the Vikings travel to Archmere to play the 4-1 Auks.
“Archmere is definitely going to be another good test for us,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “They have had some good results early and have some really skilled players. Our schedule definitely starts off very strong. We’re tested early, so hopefully we are ready for May.”
The Cape-Queen Anne’s rivalry tilts 8-4 in favor of the Vikings over the last dozen years, with seven games decided by a single goal.
The Vikings have won the last seven after dropping the first three games of the series beginning in 2013.
Cape’s goal scoring was led by Ally Diehl with five, Claire Lopez with and Haley Gamuciello with two. Single goals were scored by Mairead Rishko, Mackenzie Todd, Regan Best and Kemper Cox.
Assist makers were Lopez and Mikaela Gordon with two apiece, and single assists from Gamuciello, Diehl and Rishko.
Goalie Jordan Murray was credited with eight saves.
“Jordan has been doing a great job in the cage and was definitely locked in for the [Queen Anne’s] game. She’s really starting to step up and getting comfortable,” Underwood said.
Queen Anne’s goals were Jordan Bilbo with, and Mell Gill and Haley Cole each with one. Isabel King had an assist for the Lions.
Notes- Cape’s JV team ran its record to 5-0 with a 13-2 win over Queen Anne’s. Goal scorers for Cape were Annabell Bonk with four, Meredith Frederick three and Blair Chubb with two. Singles goals were scored by Delaney Senard, Delainey Smith, Harper Derrick and Sloan Pierce. Smith had four assists and Dasey Hughes had one. Dylan Peck was credited with six saves.
“This is a really good JV team,” said veteran JV coach Drew Messick.
In another result, Tower Hill, the only unbeaten girls’ team in Delaware, won the battle of the unbeatens April 14, defeating Tatnall 21-14. The Hillers are coached by Wiz Applegate.
