Cape major softball falls twice in District 3 play

July 6, 2018

The Cape Major Softball All-Star squad fell in its first game of the District 3 tournament 13-2 to Laurel/Nanticoke July 2 at the Lower Sussex complex. They lost their second-round game to Georgetown in a 2-0 nail-biter at the Milton Little League field.

The Cape All-Stars could only deliver four hits in the loss to Laurel/Nanticoke. Catcher Alivia Heers had two doubles. Pitcher Miranda McIlvaine had three strikeouts coming in from the bullpen.

Laurel/Nanticoke pitcher Raegan Miller gave up two runs in the first inning to Cape, but settled into a groove to allow just four Cape hits. Miller, Ashlyn Ullman, Bailey Ullman and Hannah Moore each had two hits for the Laurel/Nanticoke squad, while Alyssa Brittingham and Jordyn Evans added one each.

The Cape versus Georgetown game was a closer affair, with Cape’s Lily Hut, Miranda McIlvaine and Alyssa Oscar each garnering hits for the home squad. McIlvaine went all six innings for Cape in the pitcher’s circle, striking out six Georgetown batters, while giving up just two hits.

Georgetown’s Madge Layfield recorded 12 strikeouts for the winning team, allowing three hits and putting two Cape batters on via the walk.

The Cape All-Stars’ season ended with the loss, while Georgetown advanced to face Lower Sussex July 5 in the next round of the District 3 tournament.
