With severe weather expected to roll across Sussex County March 16, officials are urging people to be prepared.
The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; a Coastal Flood Advisory from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.; and a Wind Advisory from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. For the safety of all students, Cape Henlopen School District has canceled all after-school and evening activities.
Rehoboth Beach officials have announced the convention center will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, for charging and warmth if there are power outages. The city has also prohibited all water activities because of heavy surf conditions.
The city said it has crews ready to assist with any cleanup and preparation that is needed. Three trucks are already out picking up branches and debris around town. They will get as much as they can before the winds come in.
The city issued a few key safety reminders:
• Secure all loose umbrellas, outdoor furniture and trash cans
• Ask a neighbor to pull your trash can up from the curb if you are not home
• Avoid the beach, as beach erosion can be caused by high surf
• Motorists should use caution when driving and avoid any flooded roadways.
