Cape used 10 hits, including two homers by Ava Calciano and another by Alivia Heers, to power to a 10-2 victory over a good Smyrna team May 6 at Bill Cordrey Field.
The Vikings spread out the scoring, plating two runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings, and had a four-run inning in the fifth.
Calciano went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. One homer opened the scoring in the third, while the other came in the sixth to make it 9-1. Heers delivered a 2-for-4 performance with a homer and two RBIs. Bri Windish went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Eden Frederick went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Calciano had two steals, while Abby Marsh, Jordynn Bowe and Milena Buehler each had one.
“It was a great team win,” said Calciano. “We continue to do the little things right. We are getting contributions from everyone. I’m so excited for the last stretch of the season.”
Senior second baseman Milena Buehler recorded the 100th assist of her career in the game.
Abby Marsh went the distance in the circle, collecting seven strikeouts en route to improving her record to 14-0.
“Our girls have done an excellent job of locking in and staying on course toward our goals,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach.
“It is usually pretty normal for teams to have a letdown in the next game after an emotional win like Caravel,” said Cape assistant Chuck Hudson. “However, this team is proving that they are not normal in a number of ways. They have a very good sense of who they are collectively and what their goals are. We have been laser focused on winning every game. Today, they took care of business to give us a chance to play for the Henlopen North title.”
Smyrna senior Cimone Edge led the Eagles with a double, a homer and two RBIs.
Cape (16-0) will conclude its regular-season schedule with a Senior Day game against Padua Academy at 4:15 p.m., Tuesday, May 13.
