Cape softball knocks off Bucs 13-3

March 23, 2024

The Cape softball squad kicked off the season off with a bang March 21, defeating Milford 13-3 in five innings.

The brisk wind and chilly temperature couldn’t cool off the Vikings’ bats as they delivered 16 hits in the contest.

Cape took a 4-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back, continuing with two, three and four more in the following three innings.

Alivia Heers and Jay’Lyn Slater each went yard in the contest, scoring four and three RBIs, respectively. Junior Hayden Hudson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Abby Marsh, Bri Windish and Kenna Justice each knocked in a run. Ava Calciano and Natalya Roundtree had multiple hits for the Vikings.

Marsh went the distance in the circle, striking out six while scattering four hits.

“We need to keep the intensity up that we brought to this game,” said Marsh. “We have to stay confident with each at bat, keep manufacturing runs and keep the defense tight, and definitely use our home field advantage against the next four teams.”

“It was a solid win for us and a great start to the season,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “So many different girls contributed on both sides, offensively as well as defensively. I was very proud of the effort we got from our outfielders today. They covered a lot of ground. We hit the ball hard and consistently, with two big hom- run shots from Alivia [Heers] and Jaylyn [Slater]. I thought we ran the bases very well, between stealing bases and getting an extra base off a hit. We need to keep working hard and be prepared for a long season.”

“We are happy we have so many home games at the beginning of the season,” said Hudson. “We are hoping to get off to a good start and love playing at our home stadium.”

Milford’s Adrionna Fountain and Briella Salisbury led the Bucs with an RBI each.
