Cape softball tames Sea Wolves 3-1

Vikings earn 11th seed in state tournament
May 22, 2023

The Cape softball team moved to 11-6 May 19, with a  3-1 victory over visiting Conrad School of the Sciences on Senior Day.

After giving up an earned run in the first inning, Abby Marsh settled in and went the distance in the circle, scattering four hits and striking out 10 batters.

Jay’Lyn Slater led the Vikings at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double and driving in two runs. Marsh went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ava Calciano knocked a double, while Alivia Heers, Ava Simeone and Milena Buehler each had a hit.

“This was a nice win for us, as we finished the regular season with 11 wins,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “It’s the most regular-season wins since 2015, when that team had 14. We hit the ball hard all day, but unfortunately it was right at their defenders. Defensively, we played a solid, error-free game. Natalya Roundtree showed off her speed as she tracked down a long fly ball for an out that would have been extra bases if she didn’t get there. Alivia Heers and Ava Calciano each had a stolen base. I’m very proud of this team and the accomplishments they have had this year.

“Next week, a new season begins with the playoffs. If we are focused and play to the best of our abilities, I believe we can compete against the best. Win one game and move on. Lose and you’re out. We’re going to give it our best as coaches and players, and see how far we can go. I hope the fans will come out big to support the girls.”

No. 11 seed Cape will play host to No. 22 Archmere Tuesday, May 23. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
