Cape softball blasts into second round

Vikings use power to push past Auks 12-0

The Cape softball team powered its way into the second round of the DIAA state tournament May 23, using three home runs to blow out Archmere 12-0 in five innings. 

After scoring one run in the second inning and three in the third, the Vikings exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pitcher Abby Marsh struck out three batters in the top of the fifth inning to end the game early. Marsh struck out nine batters and allowed five hits in the game. 

Marsh opened the scoring at the plate, hitting a solo home run in the second inning. Sophomore Alivia Heers blasted a three-run homer in the third to add to the lead. The Vikings blew the game wide open with an eight-run fourth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. The inning was highlighted by a Heers base-clearing double and a home run from Jay’Lyn Slater. 

Heers finished the game with six RBIs. Sophomore Ava Calciano went 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk and two runs scored. Sophomore Bri Windish went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. 

It was the Vikings’ first state tournament win since 2005.

No. 11 Cape (12-6) will travel to No. 6 Indian River (15-3) for a second-round game Thursday, May 25. Indian River edged Cape 3-2 May 11.
