Cape swimming ready to make a splash in DIAA competition

November 25, 2021

The Cape swim teams are psyched and prepared for a successful winter season. The boys’ team went undefeated at 9-0 last season, while the Lady Vikings finished with a record of 7-2.

“A few years ago, we had to try to find boys in the hallways of Cape for the team,” said coach Bill Geppert. “This year we were blessed with an overabundance of boys who came out for the team. We had close to 30 guys come out. We graduated eight girls from the team last year, and we had a nice core of 12 girls coming back, and we have 20 girls coming out. We have good, hardworking kids coming out.”

Veteran coaches working with Geppert are Pete Olson, Tina Nigh and Rick Brokaw.

“I think we are going to do really well this season,” said senior Marcus Gromofsky. “I think we may be the best in the Henlopen Conference. Our medium distance will be the best, but our sprinters are going to be good, too.”

“I feel good about our chances,” said senior Josh Turek.

“We’re going to have a lot of competition from Sussex Academy, Caesar Rodney, Indian River, among others,” Geppert said. “A tough Brandywine squad will be coming down Dec. 7 at the Sussex Academy Aquatic Center, which will be a big meet.”

“We lost a lot of girls last season, but we have quite a few underclassmen coming up,” said senior Heidi Simmons.

“We enjoy what we’re doing so much,” said senior Gabby Robertson. “We have fun, and it takes away some of the pressure.”

“Swimming on the team is such a great environment,” said senior Sophie Schoenfeld. “It’s not like some sports that can get so competitive that it almost becomes toxic. I think swimming avoids that.”

The Cape meets will be split between the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth and the Sussex Academy Aquatic Center in Georgetown. Go to capevikingssports.com for complete details.
