Cape track downs Dover, Smyrna

April 3, 2026

The Cape track & field team hosted a tri-meet March 31 at Legends Stadium, with hundreds of fit athletes running, jumping and throwing for three-plus hours.

Only the boys’ first-place results were posted. As of deadline, we’re still waiting for the girls’ results and team scores. What I am learning from talking with some of the coaches is that the Henlopen Conference voted to forgo the reporting of the team scores. There were some meets last week that did report team scores, but there were some meets where no scores or results were posted at all. It seems as if it may be up to the host team or an agreement between the head coaches as to what gets posted. The emphasis seems to be on having more time to train, recover and attend better competition with weekend invites like a collegiate schedule. The conference will have a North and South championship.

Regardless, some great performances were turned in at Cape. Smyrna and Cape each won a relay, with the Eagles winning the 3,200-meter relay in 8:43.5 and the Vikings winning the 1,600-meter relay in 3:58.7. Dover won the two sprint relays, blazing the track in 41.8 for what could be the fastest 400-meter relay run at Cape, while also winning the 800-meter relay in 1:32.3.

Smyrna’s Phoenix Hendriquez won a fast 100 meters in 10.7, and also took the 200 meters in 21.3. Cape’s Jason Baker ran a nice time of 4:29.4 in the 1,600 meters, while Riley Stazzone won the 3,200 meters in 9:40.9. Elijah Shockley-Taylor won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.9, while Jamar Beasley won the 800-meter run in 2:01.4.

The Vikings won four of the six field events, with Liam Ramsey winning the shot put in 41-10 and the discus in 130-10. Bernard Jones won the long jump in 20-4.5, while Will DiPaolo won the pole vault in 14-9.

The Cape girls won 12 of the 18 events. Anejah Grace-Johnson won the hurdles. Cape won three of four relays, taking the 3,200 in 11:32.0, the 800 in 1:53.9 and the 1,600 in 4:48.0.

Logan Crotty won the 1,600-meter run in 5:44.1, while Lillian Holodick won the 400-meter dash in 1:02.5. Maile Godwin ran well to win the 800-meter event in 2:25.4, while Natalie Schneider won the 3,200 in 12:51. Mallory Kauffman won the shot in 35-1 and the discus in 115-4, while Natalie Horsey won the high jump in 5-0 and Kaylin Wightman won the pole vault in 6-6.

In Henlopen South action, the Sussex Academy boys and girls will attend the Moses Stancell Invitational at Laurel High School Saturday, April 4.

New record

Cape graduate and DeSales sophomore Ashley Carrier led off the record-setting 1,600-meter relay team, as Carrier split 1:02.0 and her team set the new record of 4:00.82. The record was set at the York College Twilight meet and broke a 12-year-old record. Carrier has a GPA of 3.50 and is majoring in medical studies, which is an accelerated physician assistant program.
