Cape Unified football falls to Smyrna

Cape freshman Kayden Gibbs ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns and had two sacks in the Vikings’ 74-38 loss to the Smyrna squad in a Unified teams matchup Oct. 19 at Cape’s Legends Stadium.
The game was tied 32-32 at the halftime break, but the Smyrna team scored 42 points to Cape’s six in the second half to garner the victory.
“We played great today,” said Cape coach Drew Messick. “On the ground, we are tough to stop. This game showed we need to work on catching in practice. We gave up a lot points, but we played hard. Their player Bryce Harris was a hard matchup. The score isn’t the most important thing to us. It’s about bringing everyone together, getting better at football and becoming better people. When we win, it makes it even better.”
The Cape squad moves to 1-2 on the season. They defeated Dover 49-36 Oct. 10 for their first Henlopen Conference victory and fell to Caesar Rodney 69-16 Oct. 12.
The Vikings Unified team will host Appoquinimink Tuesday, Oct. 25, for Senior Night on the Legends Stadium turf.
