Cape volleyball prepares for 2018 season

Vikings are young but hopeful
August 21, 2018

The 2018 Cape volleyball team looks to spike its way back to the DIAA State Tournament this season and improve on its 10-5 record from 2017.

The Vikings lost key players Sophia Spinelli, Logan Shuttleworth and Madeline Holt to graduation, leaving big shoes to fill on the hardwood, but seniors ready to step up to the challenge include Mackenzie Parker, Abigail Bucklin and Mikiyah Ennals.

The younger Lady Vikings are also ready for the season to begin.

“I am very optimistic for this upcoming season, and I am excited to see where our team goes,” said sophomore Katie Knarr. “Although we have a young team, I believe we all have a lot of potential.”

Major challenges on the schedule for Cape will come from Sussex Tech, Smyrna, Delmarva Christian, Caesar Rodney, Archmere, Conrad and Sanford.

"This year’s team looks great,” said sophomore Abby Derrickson. “We have a lot of energy and excitement going into the season. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but our team is ready and up for the challenge."

“I was really happy with how our tryouts progressed,” said Cape head coach Tyler Coupe, entering his fourth year at the helm. “We had roughly 10 to 12 freshmen come out this year, and some of which I look forward to making an impact on both our varsity and JV teams immediately. Our team is in a unique position where we are returning four starters, but three are rising sophomores and one senior [with three total seniors on the team]. So we’re going to be relatively young. We’re going to go through some transition periods in terms of youth taking on larger leadership roles, but I look forward to seeing the team continue to grow and fight to get 1 percent better every day.”

The Vikings travel to Wilmington Friends School Wednesday, Aug. 22, for a scrimmage with the Lady Quakers. They will host their annual play day Saturday, Aug. 25, and open the regular season Friday, Sept. 7, at home with Delmarva Christian.
