January 25, 2022

The Cape wrestling team continued its journey through a wacky winter of shifting lineups sprinkled with JV replacements, earning a 69-9 win at Sussex Tech Jan. 24 in Georgetown.

Cape rolls into a week of formidable foes, hosting Sussex Central Wednesday, Jan. 26, before traveling to Laurel Friday, Jan. 28, to grapple with a resurgent Bulldogs program that is unbeaten.

“Wrestling season always intensifies the final month of the season,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “COVID and postponed and rescheduled matches have made the sport a mental and physical challenge.”

Sussex Tech forfeited three weight classes – 113, 120 and 220 – putting the Ravens in the no-shot position against a strong Cape team with an 18-point advantage before wrestling even began.

Isaac Soto-Perez (106) got the Ravens on the board with a 7-2 win over Jacob Goodsell. Then, David Dicampli (182), with an arm in a soft cast, pinned Jack Wiggins in 1:11, and that accounted for the Ravens’ nine points.

Cape had wins by pin from Josh Alvares (132) over Hobe Givens in 2:56, Andrew Schaen (138) over Logan Flood in 0:32, Mikey Frederick (145) over Ryan Cooper in 0:45, Jo Jo McLean (152) over Donavin Tallurico in 3:02, C.J. Fritchman (160) over Michael Riguad in 5:35, Carson Kammerer (170) over Joe Kane in 1:11, Alex Taylor (195) over Jayce Harmon in 4:39, and Sean Costello (285) over Diego Santiago in 1:35.

Freshman Max Meadows (113) won by decision 7-4 over David Kristunas.
