Cape wrestling opens season with 72-3 win over Sussex Tech

Big House rocks on Teacher Appreciation Night

The top came off the Cape Big House Dec. 7 on Teacher Appreciation Night when Jefferson Lopez Garcia closed out the JV bout with a pin in the first match of the senior’s career. 

“Everybody loves Jefferson,” said JV coach Shane Jensen. “His teacher tonight is Tommy ‘Boo Boo’ Rushin. It doesn't get any more colorful than that.” 

Sussex Tech coach Scott Layfield came into the bout with two injured guys out of the lineup and another four out with the flu. 

Cape won the dual meet match 72-3 with 36 points coming by forfeit. 

Cape won five of eight contested bouts by fall in a match that started at 132 with Max Meadows over Nick Durkin (1:21), Andrew Schaen (150) over Logan Macinowski, Hayden Wheeler (157) over Asher Munoz, Luke ASrnold-Decyk (215) over Malachi Miller and Sean Costello (285) over Diego Santiago.

Ravens freshman Bennett Brumbley (144) had a back-and-forth match with Cape’s Braydon Cole and emerged with a 8-7 victory. Brumbley, who wrestled in the Polytech tournament, is now 5-1 on the young season.

Rony Perez-Mejia (120) won a 7-2 decision over David Kristunas, while Holt Baker (126) closed out the night with a hard-fought 13-8 win over Hobe Givens. 

Neutral corner - A pair of formidable foes are coming to Cape this holiday shopping season, starting with the Riders of Caesar Rodney under new head coach Trey Mitchell Wednesday, Dec. 14, followed by Caravel Academy Wednesday, Dec. 21. Senior Luke Bender is back at full strength after missing his junior year following elbow surgery. C.J. Fritchman is good to go after an early season tweak of his hamstring. The Beast of the East tournament at the University of Delaware is Dec. 17-18. Fans can follow live action either livestream or avatars at trackwrestling.com. Cape will be sending a crew of JV wrestlers to the Milford Invitational Saturday, Dec. 10. The Penn State Nittany Lions beat the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks 24-12 at Lehigh’s Stabler Arena in front of 6,000 fans.
