The Cape wrestling team surged to a 48-24 win at undefeated Woodbridge Jan. 24, behind six pins and three close decisions.

Woodbridge’s four wins all came via the pin.

Cape grapplers grabbing six points by fall or forfeit were Holt Baker (113) over Duane Cooke in 1:12, Joshua Wright (120) by forfeit, CJ Fritchman (126) over JJ Gonzales in 1:12, Luke Bender (138) over Brandon Williams in 3:16, Mikey Frederick (145) over Xavier Dunaway in 0:51 and Lucas Ruppert (285) over Derrick Atwood in 2:48.

“Ten total pins out of 14 makes for a quick match, “ said Cape coach Chris Mattioni.

Sophomore Carson Kammerer (132) scored a takedown over Gavin Manning in the final minute to win 3-2. Manning had beaten Kammerer earlier in the season at the Battle at the Beach tournament.

“That was a big win for Carson,” Mattioni said. “Manning is ranked No. 5 in the state at 132, and it’s a tough weight class.”
