The Cape/Georgetown Junior League All-Stars opened the District 3 tournament with a bang as they defeated Lower Sussex 17-1 in a five-inning mercy-rule win July 14 at Lower Sussex Little League in Roxana.
Cape/Georgetown pitcher Timmy Hitchcock picked up the win on the mound, pitching 4 2/3 innings, striking out six. Bryce Dominick came in from the bullpen to strike out the last Lower Sussex batter.
Brian Fleming led the Cape/Georgetown team at the plate, getting three hits and driving in four runs. Dominick drove in three runs with two hits. Isaac Terhune knocked in two runs with a hit. Brenn Scott and Hitchcock each had two hits and an RBI. Barritt Ross and Grant Parker each had a hit and an RBI.
Cape/Georgetown was set to move into the next round against Nanticoke/Laurel Monday, July 15.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
