Carole Shaver Schagrin, pharmacist, avid golfer
Carole Shaver Schagrin passed away Saturday, March 29, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Carole Francis Shaver to Harvey Earl and Myrle Shaver Feb. 18, 1943, in Baltimore, Md. Carole attended Eastern High School and after graduating at 16, she attended University of Maryland Pharmacy School. She graduated in the spring of 1963 and began her career as a pharmacist.
Carole gave birth to her son, William Robert Adair Jr., in October 1963, and her daughter, Robin Adair Harvey, in March 1965, while married to William Robert Adair Sr.
Carole continued her career in Baltimore until she and her second husband, Ed Lambdin, decided to move to the Lewes-Rehoboth area, where she worked in the pharmacy at Beebe Hospital and for the Rehoboth branch of Edgehill Pharmacy. She became a member of Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club and grew to love playing golf. Carole played in the women’s golf league on ladies' day and in many tournaments over the years, and she even had the good fortune to score three holes-in-one.
In the fall of 1988, Carole married Martin Schagrin from Wilmington, to whom she was married until her passing. She then began working for Happy Harry's, and she and Martin split their time between Wilmington and Rehoboth. Carole became a member of the Wilmington Country Club, where she continued her love of golf and played often with friends and in many of the Cup Matches and tournaments held by this club.
After being diagnosed with uterine cancer in 1999, Carole retired to undergo chemotherapy treatment at Sloan Kettering. After successfully completing this regimen, Carole was declared cancer-free and a cancer survivor. During this time, she became an active volunteer at A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington and at the Great Stuff consignment shop, which benefited breast cancer.
On Easter Sunday, 2016, Carole suffered a stroke, which changed her life dramatically. She partially recovered but was not able to do many of the things that she truly enjoyed. These included walking for fitness, playing golf, going on bus trips to New York, shopping, doing needlepoint, and many other crafts. Her husband, Martin, did a phenomenal job of getting her out and keeping her socially and physically active for as long as possible. The care he gave and the love he demonstrated were truly inspiring.
Carole was a very social, intelligent, and fun-loving person who also worked extremely hard all her life. She loved her family more than anything and constantly reinforced that through her actions and the attention she showed.
Carole is survived by her husband of 37 years, Martin Schagrin; her son, William Robert Adair Jr. and his wife Mary Beth Adair; her daughter, Robin Adair Harvey and her husband E. Thomas Harvey III. She is also survived by her brother and his wife, Earl and Bonnie Shaver; her nephew and his wife, Demian and Anna Shaver, all of New Zealand; and her niece and her husband Jennifer and Barney Green of Maryland.
